Why was the Indirect Rule system criticized by the nationalists?

Explanation

Reason why Indirect Rule System was criticized by the Nationalists:

(i) Alien system of administration: The colonial system of administration was different from the traditional system obtained in the southern part of the country.

(ii) Exclusion of educated elites: Educated elites were neither recognised nor given a place in the administration of their country. In fact, they were excluded from occupying sensitive position.

(iii) The system was undemocratic: Most, if not all the colonial officials were dictators. They issue instructions instead of seeking advice.

(iv) Bribery and corruption: This was rampant among the traditional rulers. Taxes collected were in most cases misappropriated by them.

(v) Puppets: Most of the Chiefs used were illiterates and were easily manipulated. In fact, they became puppets in the hands of the colonial authority.

(vi) A set – back to rapid constitutional development: It was a set back to constitutional development and early independence for the country. The traditional rulers were conservative and not ready for any constitutional change.

(vii) Division between the educated elites and the traditional rulers: Africans were set against each other (traditional rulers against the educated elites).
